The City of Adelaide is currently flirting with the idea of providing reverse vending machines that will be found in various locations throughout Adelaide in 2023-24.

What is a reverse vending machine you ask? Well, we’ll tell you. A reverse vending machine works by permitting the user to insert the recycled containers within a specific aperture inside the machine. Consequently, the machine compresses the bottle to reduce its size and allow more of them to be stored within it before they are collected and returned to the bottling company.

The proposal was made in a city committee meeting held yesterday, outlining the pilot program that hopes to revolutionise the way that we recycle.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Abrahimzadeh requested the administration to investigate the placement of recycling vending machines within the City of Adelaide as a pilot program, including but not limited to:

a. recommended location(s),
b. cost(s) to implement including capital and maintenance provision

The City of Adelaide (CoA) has previously conducted a six-month trial of a reverse vending machine (RVM)
at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, however, the trial did not result in a permanent installation.

The committee found that “it is unclear whether there are any RVM in operation in South Australia at this time”.

If the motion to move forward is supported by the Council, the City of Adelaide will work with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to investigate suitability, licensing requirements, acceptance criteria, target audience (e.g. residents or public) and any upfront and ongoing financial commitments.

As well as exploring financial grant opportunities, for example, Green Industries SA Council Modernisation Grant, to support an RVM and consider the pilot project in planning for 2023-24.

This is still in the earliest stage of production so there are no specific dates to look forward to, but you can visit the City of Adelaide’s website here for continuing updates.
