Protect Your Pets This NYE

New Year’s Eve celebrations will have the Animal Welfare League (AWL) on red alert as the many firework displays, synonymous with New Year’s celebrations, result in hundreds of lost dogs.

“In the first TWO weeks of this year (2010), over 250 dogs and puppies found their way into the care of the AWL Wingfield shelter, after fleeing the terrifying firework explosions”, says Brenda Champion, AWL Public Relations and Communications Officer.

“In 2011, it is inevitable that we will receive the same amount, if not more, lost dogs after New Years. They will arrive scared, hungry and physically ill from the stress of being away from home. Plus they have the added stress of the searing heat forecast for the New Year”

“We are urging ALL responsible pet owners to make sure that their dog is safe and secure inside the house on New Years. If they are left to cope on their own outside they will become very frightened and will go to great lengths to escape the noise. Please also ensure your pets have cool, fresh water and somewhere cool to sleep”

“Also ensure that animals are registered as it is the best way of ensuring they are reunited with their pet should their dog or cat run away from their property during the festive season. If your animal does escape, place a lost report with the AWL and with your local council immediately.

New Year celebrations, together with the expected extreme heat, will cause heartbreak for many pet owners.

In the lead up to the scorching New Years Eve, the AWL offers these tips :-

• If possible keep your pets indoors to avoid the heat, and stress of fireworks

• Leave the TV or Radio on to disguise the noises

• Maintain a secure backyard, dogs and cats can escape very easily when stressed or frightened

• If your pet is staying with friends ensure it is micro-chipped and is wearing an identification collar with its temporary living details attached

• Offer a supervised paddling pool in the shade for pets to keep cool in

• Ensure your animals have plenty of water

• Be wary of hot pavement on pets feet

• Try to avoid exercising your pet in the hot weather

• Have your long haired animals clipped

• NEVER leave a dog in the car
