Adelaide-based Arts high school teacher, watercolourist and mother, Simela Petridis, thrilled thousands of music devotees on Sunday night’s episode of Australian Idol. Performing a heart-rendering piano-folk reimagination of the adored single by Grammy-award winning pop rock musician Paula Cole, entitled ‘I Don’t Want To Wait’ (of Dawson’s Creek fame), this exhibition was certainly at an extraordinary level of exhilaration.
The emotional presentation even brought previous Australian Idol runner-up, actress, singer/songwriter, and judge on the night Jessica Mauboy, to tears. The striking rendition, with similarities to Paloma Faith and Lola Young’s spiritually radiant voices, also left Amy Shark and Marcia Hines amazed and speechless.
“I have never experienced an audition like that before. WOW!” Amy exclaimed after a dramatic few seconds of reflection. “All I can say is: ‘Yes sister girlfriend, yes you did beautiful’, that was beautiful.” Marcia quickly agreed.
“[I was] so taken by your performance, and your story through that song. I could hear every kind of crack and moment and visualise your life. I have just become a mother, so I relate. Thank you for sharing that,” Jess shared.
Although nervous at the start, Simela captivated viewers nationwide, which included her friends, family, and even students. Deservedly, she triumphed in her audition.
“How could we not? It’s a ‘Yes’ from all of us,” Marcia professed on behalf of all of the judges (and the majority of the Australian audience).
After receiving hugs from both Jess Mauboy and Amy Shark, it was more than evident that Simela is destined for a truly special adventure on this Australian Idol journey.
You certainly “don’t wanna wait” on discovering the beauty of Simela Petridis.
