The tale of this CBD cafe giant may have been named after the Shakespeare play, but My Kingdom for a Horse has carved its own path in Adelaide’s culinary canon.

Tucked away on Adelaide’s Wright Street, My Kingdom for a Horse boasts bright colours that captivate the personality, style and character of the cafe.

The cafe has an impressive legacy of award wins, with this year’s win for Best Restaurant at the 2022 SA Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence being its most recent accolade.

Priding themselves on carefully curated coffee blends, their head barista Genie Chee has been chosen to take this cafe from humble beginnings to a different stratosphere.

Genie has been with working alongside owner Emily Raven since 2016. Genie’s hospitality journey – like most – started with franchises and then slowly vision for the future began to sprout. Genie’s passion for coffee making and roasting is undeniable.

“I used to come into the cafe as a customer and thought it would be great if I could work here one day. I wasn’t confident then and thought I didn’t know enough, but I soon realised that I needed to get to work and build my skillset.

“I learnt a lot. What we know is all we know until someone comes in and grants a different perspective, and that is what my experience here has given me,” Genie says.

Emily has found a right-hand woman in Genie, making the relationship between the two rewarding for not only the business but rewarding for its patrons.

“I have an extreme passion for learning and growing with every skill or experience I take on. I also love to train and cultivate others’ passion for coffee making. It’s very rewarding when you’re working with someone and seeing them grow and learn,” Genie continued.

Emily and Genie have really taken the time to craft their coffee blends to satisfy returning and regular customers with different seasonal creations.

“Our coffee is seasonal and changes all the time. We have two espresso blends that change every three months and we are aiming for a consistent flavour profile. We do a barista blend from Brazil and Colombia which is something a bit more fruity,” Genie said.

The pair have a commitment to fair trade and an interest in both locally farmed and internationally sourced beans, as well as a curiosity for different processing methods.
