The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of South Australia this afternoon, with heavy rainfall, large hailstones and damaging winds expected as storms develop across the state’s east.
The warning, issued at 2.25pm on Tuesday, 20 October, covers parts of the Mid North, Riverland, Flinders and North East Pastoral districts.
According to the Bureau, severe thunderstorms are developing over central parts of eastern South Australia, with dangerous conditions possible over the next several hours.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms have been forming near and ahead of a slow-moving surface trough, creating conditions favourable for severe weather.

The Bureau has warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, while large hailstones and damaging wind gusts pose additional risks to properties, vehicles and people caught outdoors.
The latest warning follows this morning’s weather forecast, which identified a risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the state throughout Tuesday.
Adelaide was also forecast to experience possible thunderstorms today, with heavy rain potentially leading to flash flooding. However, the 2.25pm severe thunderstorm warning specifically identifies parts of regional South Australia, rather than metropolitan Adelaide.
The South Australian State Emergency Service is urging residents in affected areas to take precautions as the storms approach.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, move vehicles under cover or away from trees, and remain indoors away from windows while thunderstorms are nearby.
People should also stay clear of fallen power lines, creeks and stormwater drains, and never attempt to drive, ride or walk through floodwaters.
Conditions are expected to remain unsettled across parts of regional South Australia, with further showers and thunderstorms possible on Wednesday before the weather begins to settle in some areas.
For Adelaide, Wednesday is forecast to bring clearing cloud and a maximum of 25 degrees, followed by warmer conditions on Thursday, when temperatures are expected to reach 31 degrees.
Residents should continue monitoring the Bureau of Meteorology for updated warnings, as thunderstorm conditions and affected areas can change rapidly.
