The state government will be injecting $12.2 million into the Botanic Gardens of South Australia.

Adelaide and Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, and Botanic Park will benefit from the cash stimulus announced in this week’s state budget.

Director of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium, Dr Lucy Sutherland says the welcomed investment will enhance garden experiences for local, national and international visitors.

“This welcome injection of funds will be spent on upgrades that make it easier for people to connect with plants and each other in these much-loved botanical landscapes,” Dr Sutherland says.

“We will commence work on these exciting projects immediately, and we can’t wait for our visitors to be able to enjoy the benefits of these investments over the coming months and years.”

Adelaide Botanic Garden and Botanic Park will receive $9.2 million to improve garden experiences, enabling world-class events to continue.

Adelaide Botanic Garden’s 166-year old site will use the injection to improve accessibility, and implement the critical building works to safeguard scientific plant collections and heritage-listed sites.

The garden’s neighbour, Botanic Park will upgrade irrigation and utilities to allow the continuation of world-class events such as Womadelaide.

The investment will also see Mount Lofty Botanic Garden upgrade car parking, public amenities and horticultural displays.

Over 2.6 million people visit the Bontanic Gardens of South Australia’s gardens each year including approximately 25,000 school students.

The Botanic Gardens of South Australia have been providing the state with a range of cultural, recreational, educational and scientific facilities for over 160 years.
