State Opera South Australia is set to enchant audiences once again at the Adelaide Fringe, this time with their family-friendly production, “The Frog Prince.”

Scheduled for the last weekend of the Fringe at Botanic High School, the show promises a modern twist on the classic Grimm fairy-tale, delivering an uplifting journey filled with adventure, friendship, and valuable life lessons.

Executive Director of State Opera South Australia, Mark Taylor, expressed excitement about the production’s success thus far, with over 2500 children already captivated by its charm during its tour across primary schools statewide.

Taylor emphasised the company’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “We wanted to make it even more accessible for ALL kids.”

In collaboration with Allied Health professionals, State Opera has implemented various measures to ensure an inclusive experience for all attendees.

AUSLAN interpretation will be provided during the Saturday 10am performance, supported by The Growing Space, catering to patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Additionally, Sunday’s 10am performance will offer a sensory-friendly breakout space, accommodating children with communication, learning, and/or sensory needs. Tactile tours are also available upon request for attendees who are blind or have a vision impairment.

Soprano Lucy Stoddart, who portrays “Princess Juniper May” in the production, expressed her delight in merging her passion for opera with educating young audiences.

“Bringing opera to kids is a truly magical experience,” she said.

Tenor Callum McGing, making his debut as the protagonist Gilbert Gravy, shared his privilege in introducing opera to young minds.

“When kids walk away singing opera, it fills my heart with joy,” he said, echoing the sentiments of his fellow cast member, James Nicholson, who plays multiple characters in the show.

“The Frog Prince” features a captivating blend of operatic music, including compositions by renowned composers such as Mozart, Rossini, and Bizet, reimagined to captivate young audiences.

Originally produced by Opera Queensland and shake & stir theatre co, the production is tailored for children aged 12 and under, promising an enchanting experience for families attending the Adelaide Fringe.

The Frog Prince will perform four shows at the Adelaide Botanic High School Gym, with shows at 10am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, 16-17 March 2024: click here for more info.
