The Family-friendly Mardi Gras is celebrating its 65th year, making it one of the longest-running community parades in the country.

“We’ve been going for 65 years! It’s a wonderful family festival with lots of food and market stalls available, as well as entertainment for the children and performances from the Nuriootpa Town Band and Riverland Brass Band,” said the Mardi Gras Chairperson, Liz Dymmott.

“We have a fairly large parade of 50-60 floats, as well as a few competitions to raise money for the local community.

“First, we have the Nippy’s underarm bowling competition. We also have the Window Shop competition sponsored by the local paper, The Murray Pioneer.”

Partake in the orange lawn bowls, and “bowl” with oranges donated by Nippy’s. The talented bowler that gets nearest to the target wins vouchers to local businesses in Loxton.

If you’ve never visited Loxton before, the Window Shop competition will be the perfect opportunity to explore all that this great town has to offer. Each shop in town will decorate their front window to suit the Mardi Gras theme – which is, appropriately, “celebration”.

Locals will gather to not only celebrate their community, but celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community by championing creative expression, and elevating diverse voices.

The Governor of South Australia, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, will be in attendance, much to the delight of locals.

“It’s a privilege to have the Governor of South Australia come to our event! She’ll also be at our appreciation service on Sunday, where we honour and thank the many volunteers that get behind this event,” said Liz.
