Eat + Drink

These monthly scroll drops have become a sell-out Hills ritual, and we can reveal the next flavour

September’s drop brings together two internet dessert obsessions in one oversized bakery treat, with a matching iced latte landing alongside it.

More and more people are making the early-morning trip into the Hills, because if you arrive at the Uraidla Bakery too late, there’s a very likely chance you’ll miss out.

Each month, the cosy bakery drops a limited-edition scroll alongside a matching iced latte, and soon the fun idea has become one of the most anticipated weekend offerings.

Ferrero Rocher, maple sea salt, chocolate pistachio and Kinder Bueno have already rolled across the counter, with some flavours selling out before late-morning visitors even get a whiff.

If you’re on the lookout for what the new September drop will be, we’ve got you covered, and it’s a caramel coffee love affair.

Coming in September, and only available on weekends, will be the Biscoff Tiramisu mash-up of our dreams.

The monthly specials are the brainchild of café manager Lauren Crossfield, who took over the role just over a year ago and wanted to give people another reason to make the trip to Uraidla.

“As someone who is chronically online and constantly discovering incredible businesses and food trends, I pitched the idea of a monthly scroll and latte special to our Head Baker, Haydn, and, as always, he worked his magic.”

Lauren wanted something playful and unexpected that could broaden the café’s audience, while Haydn could turn the flavour concepts into the actual pastry.

“Our team has also become incredibly invested in the monthly drops, with staff constantly throwing around flavour ideas they’d love to see next,” she said.

While Lauren is busy whipping up the latte specials, which are a mix of syrup and cold foam, the chefs and bakers are her professional taste testers.

“And they’re certainly not afraid to give honest feedback.”

But it’s not something she takes as a negative. It’s important that every product, each month, is something the Uraidla Bakery team is proud to share with the rest of SA.

It takes a bit of brain power to develop the flavours, which are decided about a month in advance, with scrolls priced at $9 and matching lattes at $10.

“I love to draw inspiration from incredible bakeries around Australia.”

Bakery manager Haydn has been part of Uraidla Bakery since its early days, before spending several years travelling Australia and working in bakeries around the country.

He returned to Adelaide and stepped into the manager role around 2022, bringing some of those experiences back into the kitchen.

“I was lucky enough to work alongside some incredibly talented bakers and see a huge variety of approaches to bread, pastry and hospitality,” Haydn said.

“Since coming back, I’ve really enjoyed bringing some of those experiences with me and working alongside Lauren and the whole team to keep learning, experimenting and developing the range we offer.”

The Kinder Bueno combo

Of all the flavours so far, one has clearly taken the crown.

Kinder Bueno became the bakery’s biggest seller to date, while Ferrero Rocher, Chocolate Pistachio and Maple Sea Salt each still built their own following online.

What’s even better is the whole thing plays out inside one of the Adelaide Hills’ more unusual hospitality spaces, and certainly makes the trip worthwhile.

Uraidla’s café and bakery opened in 2018 inside a building that has previously been a squash court, fish and chip shop and café. Its soaring ceilings later made it an ideal home for the adjoining brewery tanks, while huge steel-framed windows mean visitors can watch the bakers and brewers at work.

And with the Uraidla Hotel just next door, just as quirky and serving food that nearly overtakes the frosting on top of the bakery’s scrolls, there’s a whole day that’s easy to whisk away.

As all good things come with a catch, this popular dessert combo is usually a sell-out and goes fast, with Lauren encouraging travellers to be at the doors before 10am.

So this weekend, set the alarms, because this combo is far better than any sleep-in.
