One of South Australia’s oldest remaining houses, Kingston House, is bringing you a unique experience this year as their Devonshire Tea & Talk sessions kick off.

From now until November, history enthusiasts of Adelaide are invited to attend this tea and talk.

Constructed in 1840, Kingston House is a step back in time, the quiet beauty and hidden charm of the House and Reserve make it a favourite picnic spot for visitors.

The traditional Devonshire Tea is set to include two freshly baked scones for you to layer local jam and freshly whipped cream on top, and wash it all down with a cup of tea or coffee. Vegan and gluten free options are available upon request when booking.

Once warmed by the afternoon tea, you can then embark on a walk of the three-acre reserve where you can drink in the magnificent views of the coast below.

The Kingston House was the country home of the Kingston Family, a family who were extremely influential in the founding of the South Australian colony and of the nation.

The original owner, George Strickland Kingston, came to South Australia aboard the ‘Cygnet’ in 1836 as Deputy Surveyor to Colonel Light and purchased the property in April 1839. The original build which began in 1839 included 3 rooms constructed from prefabricated timber panels shipped out from England.

In 1851, George set to make the home his permanent residence and improve his stunning property, he added the two-storey eastern wing which resulted in the attractive and substantial building that we all see today. The house remained in the Kingston family for another seventy years until his son’s widow, Lucy, passed away in 1919.

The South Australian State Government purchased the property in the 1920s and the property was restored due to popular demand in 1983.

While the world changed and grew, Kingston House is one of the few places that stayed frozen in time. It is truley a wonder to view how life was so long ago, how many of our ancestors would have lived.
