2021’s best April Fools jokes

pacific dawn cruise ship

Here’s some of today’s best April Fools jokes, from Adelaide and beyond.

April 1st. It’s the one day of the year, when, for a few hours, big brands, media outlets, small businesses and mates, all throw caution to the wind, and share April Fools posts, luring their communities into believing something that’s not quite true, or outright ridiculous.

This year there have been some absolute crackers shared on social media, including some golden nuggets from South Australian Police, SAFM and more.

Here’s some of our favs.

Hains & Co buying a cruise ship

Yep, this one was ours. As much as we wanted to believe it, it’s just an April Fools gag set up by much-loved local bar Hains & Co. We shared an article this morning which stated that the popular local bar had teamed up with hospitality heavyweights Pirate Life and Never Never Distillery, buying a cruise ship that was destined for the scrap heap, to instead create a Hains & Co. boat experience, complete with four restaurants, five bars, and even a built-in distillery. Popeye blocking the Torrens, Suez style

SAFM got in the spirit of things this morning, posting this gem on Facebook.

DEVELOPING: The Pop Eye has blocked Adelaide’s Torrens River and is wedged end to end. After the Ever Given blocked the Suez Canal last week, Adelaide’s having its own maritime disaster. A salvage company will be sent in to free the vessel and open up the traffic (to ducks).

SA Country Fire Service uniform to include kilt

Love this one! The SA Country Fire Service posted an update to their uniform on their Facebook page saying “In recognition of the fearless leadership demonstrated by our Chief Officer (and proud Scotsman), Mark Jones QFSM, the SA Country Fire Service has adopted an official tartan, with a kilt now available to be worn as a part of our Day Dress and Field uniforms. The kilt must be paired with navy blue knee high socks, with sporrans and other accessories worn in accompaniment at the individual’s discretion.”

South Australian Police Dachshunds & Drone force

This almost had us, until we read the bit about the drones flying the dogs around….

This morning SA Police posted this doozy on social media, complete with promotional video!

We are proud to announce an expansion to our Dog Ops kennel with the introduction of Small Area Urban Searching and Guided Evacuation Dogs. The new Police Dog (PD) recruits – Tex, Snoop and Gracie – are purebred Dachshunds and have been purposely chosen to bring a whole new range of dog operational capabilities. Dachshunds, while small in stature, are absolutely courageous in nature. They are a highly intelligent breed and have a sense of smell about forty times more efficient than a human’s, making them excellent at tracking and hunting. Operationally, we are seeing criminals hide contraband in hard to access small areas requiring police to spend significant resources removing or shifting heavy items. Items are also commonly found under lowered motor vehicles. The Dachshunds will mainly be used for accessing small or restricted areas where the traditional 40kgs German Shepherds and Labradors cannot. In a further potential use of the new PDs, Police have been working closely with specialist vets and dog trainers to ascertain if the light weight dogs could be transported safely by drone and released into hard-to-access areas, where larger PDs cannot get into due to their size. The use of these new PDs in non-traditional situations will greatly increase the Dog Ops Unit’s capabilities. Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has described this latest innovation as a big step forward in thinking outside the square when it comes to police operations. “The capabilities of these dogs is simply amazing, which I would have never thought possible. This includes accessing under low cupboards, beds and other furniture; checking for explosives under vehicles or structures; and being able to fly into traditionally no go areas and released safely without any harm to the dog,” Commissioner Stevens said.

Fresh 927 Swapping Windback Wednesdays for Weather Wednesdays

On an instagram post, that immediately went crazy, Fresh 927 announced the cancellation of their hugely popular Windback Wednesdays, offering listeners instead the chance to listen to Weather Wednesday, which would feature the sound of rain among other things.

City of Port Adelaide Enfield announcing glowing algae lights for their vehicles

On a Facebook post showing their creativity as a council, Port Adelaide posted this: We’re always looking for new ways to do things in PAE and one of our latest trials involves these eco-friendly safety lights on our vehicles. Rather than using power, these lights contain a naturally occurring bioluminescent algae which emits a bright glow. The algae normally glow a bluish-green colour due to the colour of the water, so in order for it to glow the correct orange to use on construction sites, our apprentice mechanic Tom goes around once a week and tops them up with orange water. We hope to see these new eco lights roll out across our whole fleet soon!

Outside of SA, the big brands also had a field day.

Tim Tam Spread

Look, this one we could definitely get behind. Move aside Nutella, Tim Tam Spread is the new best thing on earth. Pity it’s only an April Fools. The brand posted this on their Facebook page:

Your future mornings will be ready, spread, GO! Introducing our NEW Tim Tam Chocolate Spread fully equipped to toastally revolutionise your brekkies and bikkies! Crust us…

Vegemite Iced Coffee

And one we could live without? A new Vegemite & Dare collaboration on Iced Coffee. No thanks!

Vegemite posted this on their Facebook page:

Want iced coffee that Tastes Like Australia? New Dare #VEGEMITE will do the trick! #TastesLikeAustralia Dare Iced#VEGEMITE

Violet Crumble Beer

After legitimately writing a story about FruChoc Beer earlier this year, we kinda hoped this one was real, but alas no.

Violet Crumble posted this on their Facebook page:

Them: There’s not many things that are more true blue than Australia’s original chocolate bar.Us: Hold my beer. Literally. And here we are. Forget VB, we’ve gone one letter better. VC Lager. A classic lager, brewed using the finest Australian malted barley and hops, classic Australian tap water – none of that fancy artesian stuff for us – and a twist of chocolate and honeycomb to create a True Blue Aussie Brew. A distinctive, easy drinking lager that even Karl Lagerfeld would think is pretty damn good, if he was still with us (RIP legend). You’ll be shattered if you miss out on trying this limited edition beer. Now available where all the best beers, and some of the worst ones too, are sold.

Deliveroo For Pets

We are actually kind of devastated that this one is a prank. Popular food delivery service Deliveroo posted on their socials claiming that they had a technological breakthrough which gives pets the ability to order food for their owners.

As much as we would love for our furry friends to be able to get treats for us, it’s probably best that we just get the treats for them.

Krispy Kreme Glaze Spread

Krispy Kreme may have answered our prayers in their recent post on social media, but alas, being April Fools, it was just a ruse. This is definitely what dreams are made of. Maybe it’s for the best that we can’t put the infamous Krispy Kreme glaze on absolutely everything- or eat it by the spoonful.

Subway Coriander Cookie

Everyone loves a Subway cookie, but not everyone loves coriander. This new cookie, which Subway posted on their social media channels earlier this morning, seems to have people very divided. Are you team coriander cookie, or no?

Boost Juice Mango Magic Prank

Not going to lie, Boost had us fooled for a second. They announced on their social media pages that they are expanding their menu to include a range of vegan smoothies that were previously only limited edition, but to make room, they had to trim the menu.

Out of all the smoothies they decided to cut, it was fan-favourite mango magic. People are clearly upset, with the Facebook post receiving nearly 10k comments.
