Third TV Pilot to Film in Adelaide This Week

Comedian Jason Chong

The Black Box Experiment prepares to film its third television pilot this week, and introduces its new television concept to run throughout August.

As The Black Box Experiment (BBX) prepares to film its third TV pilot this coming Wednesday night, record numbers of audiences have flocked to the Rhino Room during July to witness the evolution of techno-comedian Jason Chong’s interactive game show, Read the Room.

BBX is produced by 1UP Digital, giving local artists a month of Wednesdays to fine-tune a concept, with the final show of the month being filmed as a television pilot. These pilots can then be pitched to broadcast and online channels, and will form a series for broadcast on Channel 44.

Read the Room is hosted by BBX brainchild, Jason Chong (pictured above), an Adelaide Comedian of the Year & Adelaide Comedy Hall of Famer. His game show asks audiences to anonymously vote on curly issues and crazy scenarios using their smartphone. Contestants are then asked to read the room and predict which way the crowd will swing. Chong often incorporates technology into his stand-up comedy, making Read the Room an ideal blend of his skills.

Chong has pulled the largest crowds since the BBX project began, with audiences coming to witness a different episode each week and provide feedback so it can be improved upon for the following week. The game show will now be filmed in partnership with Channel 44 from 7pm this coming Wednesday night, 31 July, and you are invited to charge up your smartphone and get along to participate. Tickets are only $10 at the door or a measly $8.50 if purchased online in advance.

Next month, BBX is going off-script, swapping a single new show idea for multiple radio play-style readings of scripts by Adelaide comedians and writers. A Real Page Turner is an exciting step in a writer’s evolution from page to stage – and ultimately to screen. Battling for stage time are scripts by Irish comedian Eddie Bannon, multi-award-winning playwright Caleb Lewis, transgender comedian Chloe Black, and more.

The ultimate goal of BBX is to bring back the filming of weekly live television in Adelaide. In total, BBX is mentoring and filming seven pilots over seven months, providing Adelaide audiences an opportunity to actively participate in the development of each show and be a part of the studio audience. It’s a unique opportunity for artists and audiences alike. Let’s make the most of it!
