Adelaide singles network The Modern Social to host V-Day mixer

Adelaide-based singles networking group The Modern Social is hosting a Valentine’s Day mixer for anyone who doesn’t want to spend the holiday alone

This V-Day mixer is designed for singles, but not everyone has to be “ready to mingle” romantically!

Adelaide-based singles networking group The Modern Social is hosting a Valentine’s Day mixer on Sunday, Feb. 14, for anyone who doesn’t want to spend the holiday alone. The ticketed event will take place at the Highway from 6:30 – 9:30 pm and will have canapés, drinks, music and chatting.

“The event is for singles and solos looking to expand their social horizons, meet new people, experience new venues, and enjoy the potential of the night,” Bianca Tropeano, the company’s founder, says.

“Basically, get offline and get an opportunity to meet people in real life!”

Tropeano started The Modern Social (TMS) for a Valentine’s Day event in 2017, so the upcoming mixer will double as the company’s fourth birthday. She was first inspired to start a networking group after many years in hospitality.

“I’ve worked in bars for 20 years, so I would see people out and laughing with friends and realised some people don’t have that,” Tropeano says.

At the time, she was a single parent struggling to find anyone of interest online, so she decided to host a series of in-person events. However, a life coach and counselor, Tropeano champions any form of connection and knows dating isn’t the priority for many TMS members.

“Even if there isn’t romantic chemistry with anyone at an event, it’s still a fun night out in the worst-case scenario,” she says.

“Real life social interaction is more important to wellness than people even realise.”

Although setting up romantic relationships isn’t TMS’ only goal, it worked well for Tropeano and many other TMS members: Tropeano and her partner Luke are celebrating two years together after meeting at a TMS “supper club” event 4 years ago. And they aren’t the only ones.

“Heaps of couples and friendship groups have come from it,” Tropeano says.

“I know one couple who met at an event that just had their second child. It’s so crazy that those two humans wouldn’t exist without The Modern Social!”

TMS was on a hiatus during COVID, but the company is now back to its usual monthly meetup. Since the company’s founding, TMS has had 84 events, which are either casual mixers such as the Valentine’s Day event, or more intimate “supper club” dinners. The members attend a gala about once a year as well.

“At the Make a Wish Ball two years ago, 40 of us arrived as a huge group that otherwise wouldn’t have gone because we would’ve been alone,” Tropeano says. “It was awesome.”

Going forward, Tropeano will also focus on SO.MAD., an offshoot of TMS that will utilize its founder’s background as a wellness coach to host workshops and training with a goal of social cohesion.

With thousands of members and branches in both Adelaide and Sydney, TMS events guarantee guests will meet dozens of singles in their area. The Valentine’s Day event is $29 and includes canapés.
