Adelaide is in for a cool but mostly settled week to start, before a wetter change arrives just in time for the weekend. For much of the next seven days, the city can expect below-average daytime temperatures, a run of crisp mornings, and fairly calm conditions, with showers becoming more likely from Friday and setting in properly across Saturday and Sunday.
Tuesday is shaping up as the pick of the drier days in Adelaide, with mostly sunny skies and a top of 17 degrees. Easterly winds will stay light to moderate, helping keep things brisk but pleasant if you’re out and about. Wednesday follows a similar temperature pattern, with a chilly morning low of 8 degrees before another top of 17 degrees under partly cloudy skies. It’s another day that should stay largely dry, though the cooler air will still be noticeable first thing.
By Thursday, Adelaide’s weather starts to edge towards a small change. The city is forecast to remain partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower, but rainfall totals look minimal at this stage, if anything falls at all. Light winds through the morning will help keep conditions fairly manageable, with temperatures holding steady between 9 and 17 degrees.
Friday is when the shift becomes more noticeable. Adelaide should see a mostly sunny morning, but showers are expected to become more likely during the afternoon and evening as the next system moves closer. The daytime top will dip slightly to 16 degrees, and northerly winds will begin to freshen later in the day. For anyone planning after-work outings or heading into the city Friday night, it’s one to keep an eye on.
The weekend looks decidedly wetter. Saturday is forecast to be cloudy with a very high chance of showers, and this is likely to be the wettest day of the seven-day stretch. Between 3 and 15 mm is possible, with northerly winds turning west to northwesterly and becoming much stronger during the morning. That will make it feel colder than the 16-degree maximum suggests, especially in exposed spots and along the coast. Sunday stays cloudy and unsettled, with another very high chance of showers and a top of 15 degrees. Westerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h will keep that wintry feel in place.
Looking ahead to Monday, Adelaide won’t quite shake the showers yet. The city is expected to see partly cloudy conditions with a high chance of a shower or two and a top of 16 degrees. Winds remain in the west before tending northwesterly later, rounding out a week that starts quietly but ends with classic mid-winter weather across the metro area. For those on the water, Adelaide Metropolitan Waters stay fairly calm through Friday, with seas below 1 metre and only a 50 per cent chance of showers by the end of the working week.
Across the rest of South Australia, the broader pattern is similar in structure but a little more active away from Adelaide. A ridge extending over the state is keeping conditions cold and relatively stable early in the week, with morning fog and patchy frost about the agricultural area on Tuesday and again through Wednesday and Thursday. East of the ranges, cold starts are expected, while central and western parts of the pastoral districts, along with the West Coast district, are more likely to see showers develop. By Thursday, isolated showers may spread into the agricultural area during the afternoon, and there is also the possibility of thunderstorms in the far northeast. Rainfall totals to the end of Thursday are expected to stay mostly below 2 mm across the agricultural area, while parts of the west and north could pick up 2 to 10 mm, with isolated falls of 10 to 20 mm possible.
