The wet, wintry weather continues this week in Adelaide, with rain settling in from today before cooler, showery conditions carry through into the weekend.
Cloudy skies are already setting the tone across Adelaide today, and the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a very high chance of rain with up to 15mm possible. Northerly winds will turn northeasterly through the afternoon, and the city is only expected to reach 20 degrees. Wednesday looks even wetter, with steady rain likely and possible falls of 10 to 25mm. Temperatures will stay mild, with a low of 15 and a top of 20, while northeasterly winds shift northerly during the day.
By Thursday, the pattern starts to change. Adelaide is expected to see a brief break in the solid rain, but showers will build again during the afternoon and evening as stronger northwesterly winds move in. It will feel noticeably cooler too, with the temperature dropping to a top of just 16 degrees after an overnight low of 11. Friday keeps that colder feel in place, with more showers likely, especially in the morning and afternoon, before winds swing southwesterly and gradually ease later in the day. The city is again heading for a maximum of 16 degrees.
The weekend should bring some relief, although it will stay on the chilly side. Saturday is shaping up as partly cloudy with the chance of a shower or two and light winds, while Sunday looks quieter with only a slight chance of a passing shower. Both days are forecast to top out at 16 degrees, with overnight temperatures dropping to around 9 degrees. Looking ahead to Monday, Adelaide holds onto that settled pattern with partly cloudy skies, light winds and just a slight chance of a shower.
Across South Australia, the broader picture is more active, with a slow-moving low pressure system over the Bight and a series of fronts driving widespread rain, showers and some thunderstorms through several districts. Western parts of the state and the agricultural area are seeing the most consistent wet weather first, with isolated thunderstorms possible in the west, and that unstable pattern continues into Wednesday and Thursday as the fronts move through.
Rainfall totals by the end of Friday could be significant in parts of the state, though they will depend on exactly how the low moves. The Bureau says much of SA can expect 10 to 40mm, easing to 5 to 20mm northeast of Pukatja/Ernabella to Yunta. Higher totals of 40 to 70mm are possible over the south of the North West Pastoral district, West Coast district and the southern agricultural area, with isolated totals above 70mm possible in the west and near southern coasts and ranges.
Conditions are also worth watching for people travelling through the state’s inland river regions. Elevated river levels continue along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka, where floodwaters from upstream are expected to keep levels high for the next few weeks. The Bureau warns that many roads and access tracks are impacted by flooding, particularly at river and creek crossings, so travellers should check conditions before heading out.
Happy Tuesday, stay dry!
