Adelaide’s first skyscraper has just unveiled a $1M transformation

Mantra Adelaide Central has got refreshed guest spaces, spacious apartment-style rooms and all in the heart of the city.

One of Adelaide’s most recognisable heritage buildings has entered a new era, with the historic T&G Building on King William Street now relaunched as Mantra Adelaide Central after a major multi-year refurbishment.

Originally constructed in 1925 as Adelaide’s first skyscraper, the landmark CBD building has been transformed for its second century, blending apartment-style accommodation with upgraded guest spaces, modern security and essential infrastructure improvements.

“The T&G has been part of Adelaide’s skyline for over a century, this refurbishment is about making sure it’s here for the next one,” Owner Greg Garrihy said.

“It’s been a significant investment, and we’re confident it positions the hotel strongly for the years ahead.”

The 72-room hotel sits in the heart of the city, just moments from Rundle Mall, Adelaide Oval, the Convention Centre and Festival Plaza, putting guests within easy reach of the city’s best dining, shopping and events.

Greg said that central address is one of the property’s strongest assets. “For both business and leisure travellers, being right in the heart of Adelaide does a lot of the heavy lifting.”

The apartments themselves are also a major part of the appeal. Mantra Adelaide Central offers some of the most spacious apartment-style accommodation in the Adelaide CBD, with generously sized layouts and large living and kitchen areas.

The soaring ceilings, a legacy of the building’s century-old bones, add a sense of volume and light that is hard to find in modern city hotels. The rooms feel more like somewhere to properly settle in, rather than simply somewhere to leave your luggage.

The rebrand also marks a significant commercial milestone for the property’s management group.

1834 Hotels has managed the property as part of its portfolio for several years, and the move to Mantra strengthens its ongoing partnership with Accor Hospitality Group. Through the rebrand, the hotel now has access to Accor’s global distribution platforms, the ALL Accor loyalty programme, and a broader domestic and international guest base.

“We are proud to see this property transition into the Mantra brand,” said 1834 Hotels CEO, Rodney Harrex.

“It reflects the strength of our ongoing partnership with Accor and, importantly, I’m confident it will deliver strong growth outcomes for our owner.

“This rebrand positions the hotel alongside other leading hotel brands in the Adelaide CBD and ensures it is well placed to capture growing demand for centrally located, apartment-style accommodation in the city,” he said.

Whether it’s a festival weekend, a business trip or an extended city staycation, now is the perfect time to experience one of Adelaide’s most storied addresses.
