Celebrate 150 Years With Some Classical Class At Adelaide Town Hall

The Adelaide Youth Orchestra will be the showcase this coming Tuesday as the Adelaide Town Hall marries the classics with young talent as part of their 150 year celebrations.

She’s a grand old building, one of the finest in Adelaide and remains proudly a key part of our city’s fabric. Adelaide Town Hall is 150 years old. Just think of the number of kisses that have announced the start of marriages there! Or all the number of sharp minds who have spoken passionately from a pedestal in one of their many rooms.

Or for that matter, the number of virtuoso performances hosted in their Grand Hall.

Over 150 years, the venue is quite literally teeming with history, so it seems very apt that as part of these celebrations the hall is looking to the future in Adelaide, inviting the Adelaide Youth Orchestra to perform a historic gala concert this coming week to coincide with their Maesto Series.

In a special emulation of the official opening night concert held at the venue in 1866, and by invitation of the Lord Mayor, Maestro Series 2: Pure Poetry will see AdYO raise the rafters of the Adelaide Town Hall with a program of classical masterworks in what will be the flagship event of the building’s 150th celebrations. This marriage of young and classic seems to reflect Adelaide’s current state of play in so many ways – the heritage of our city grounds us with a pride of place, but at the same time it’s fresh ideas and young people that are helping reinvent how we work, live and play in within the CBD.

Acclaimed, prize-winning pianist Mekhla Kumar (pictured), whose last performance in Adelaide was a sell-out, will be taking the lead as part of the event while 80 of South Australia’s most talented young musicians will be conducted by Artistic Director Keith Crelli.

Nothing like a bit of class on your Tuesday evening. Adelaide Youth Orchestras’ Maestro Series 2: Pure Poetry is at Adelaide Town Hall on Tuesday, June 21 at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now through AdYO on 8361 8896 or online.
