David Harrower’s “Blackbird”

Blackbird PlayFlying Penguin Productions, in association with Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program, presents the South Australian Premiere of Blackbird, by David Harrower.

“All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to be free.” Blackbird (Lennon/McCartney)

Fifteen years ago Ray and Una had a relationship that ended suddenly. He was 40 and she was 12. They haven’t seen each other since. Now, Ray has moved on with a new life and a fresh start but Una has thought of nothing else and sets out to find him with shattering consequences.

Blackbird is a sensational and shocking play that asks challenging questions about society, morality and love whilst exploring the limits of language, and how the past irrevocably affects the present. Regarded as one of contemporary drama’s most significant and celebrated new writers, Scottish playwright David Harrower was inspired by a true story and named the play Blackbird after the famous Beatles song.

The five-star smash hit of the Edinburgh Festival, Blackbird has become an International phenomenon, having been translated into 12 languages and winning the prestigious 2007 Laurence Oliver Award for Best New Play.
