Shops – regardless of location and size – will be allowed to trade for the first time in South Australia this Australia Day, after a special exemption was granted by SA Treasurer Rob Lucas.

It is hoped the exemption will help shoppers make the most of the national public holiday, and support struggling industries this January 26.

As current COVID-19 restrictions in place see density capacities shrink, Lucas said that the exception to the public holiday trading legislation will help people shop local and SA on the upcoming public holiday.

The exemption will mean shoppers in the suburbs of Adelaide have the option to shop locally in the same way that shoppers in the CDB and the regions have been able to do on public holidays.

“If shoppers want to shop, traders want to trade and workers want to work they should have the opportunity to do so in their local community,” said Treasurer Rob Lucas.

“With Omicron prevalent in the community, this decision will assist social distancing and also allow families to shop close to their homes without having to travel.”

Taking to Facebook this morning, SA Premier Steven Marshall welcomed the new Australia Day trading exemption.

“Our changes will allow shoppers in the suburbs to enjoy the same opportunities as those in the regions and CBD,” said Marshall.

“My message is simple – support a local business in your area this Australia Day.

“We know it’s been tough for the hospitality industry due to Omicron restrictions, which is why this policy and our 7th support package come at an important time.”

The specific exemption for Australia Day will allow shops to open between 11.00am and 5.00pm
