Family-run South Australian business supplies company gives back to the state

Adelaide Direct Stationers attributes much of their success to its SA roots and is giving back through various programs, such as their tree planting program and their Reconciliation Action Plan.

Top South Australian business supplies company Adelaide Direct Stationers (ADS) has been owned and operated by the Whittaker family for more than 26 years. The company, passed down through generations, has sourced business supplies for some of the state’s most influential names from SkyCity, SANTOS, McMahon’s, SAPOL and more.

Growing from humble beginnings as an office supplies store, ADS has grown to the number one business supplier in the state for everything from workplace safety equipment to washroom, school and office supplies. The company won the Australian Office Products Reseller Award a record five times and received the Australian Office Products Dealer of the Decade in 2010. Adelaide Direct Stationers, which has recently moved to new facilities in Cavan, is keen to give back to the state that has made them a success for generations. The company is giving back through various programs, such as their tree planting program and their Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

To help give back to the environment, the company plants two trees for every tonne of paper sold by the business. The sustainability program started back in 2018, and the family has since planted over 3000 trees. It’s not only beneficial to the environment, but also to the family. The Whittaker family plants the trees themselves, a bonding activity they’ve done every year at a local farm in Wistow.

Director Tim Whittaker, who overtook the company from his parents Gordon and Gaynor, says the company’s familial ties and mentality contribute to the company’s success.

“Our family passion for the business flows through to our work ethic. We think of our staff as an extended family which flows through to our customers,” he says.

Adelaide Direct Stationers also take part in the Reconciliation Action Plan, which provides a framework for organisations to support the national reconciliation movement. It means the company is committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and individuals throughout their operation. Part of this was a smoking ceremony at the grand opening of a new warehouse location performed by Robert Taylor from the Kuma Kaaru Cultural Services, which signifies a welcome to the country and also assists in cleansing the area and people of bad spirits, promoting the protection and well-being of visitors.

The company is also the exclusive distributer of Nood Australia products, made with native Australian botanicals. The business supplies company has worked with South Australian Department of Education to get Nood Kuldi Hand Sanitiser into all state schools in SA.

Tim is passionate about these projects because the company is committed to giving back to the environment and to their home state.
