What began almost in secret, has finally been given a permanent front door.

For years, The Greek Warehouse existed in the background of owner Anna Kyrtzaliotis-Morakis’ life, beginning while she was living in Greece, and eventually turning into festival stalls filled with pieces of Greek culture for Australians missing a connection to home.

Now, after years of bringing that little slice of Greece to customers wherever she could, Anna has taken the leap she once hesitated to make, with The Greek Warehouse’s first permanent Adelaide store up and running.

“The opening went really well … we had so many people come through over the first three days, honestly, more than we expected, and we’ve received such lovely and positive feedback,” Anna said.

“It’s made me realise that I probably should have opened the shop years ago!”

The shelves are filled with the pieces that have helped build The Greek Warehouse’s following over the years and that are difficult to find anywhere else in Adelaide.

Among the most popular since opening have been the jewellery ranges, particularly Grecian and religious jewellery, reflecting what has always sat at the heart of the business, bringing authentic pieces of Greek culture closer to those living far away.

The logistics of importing large amounts of stock from Greece had always made Anna cautious about committing to a bricks-and-mortar store. Opening meant having enough products to fill shelves, replenish them and give customers something new to discover.

“But now that we’re finally open, I’m so glad I took the leap.”

“The after-hours work has been busy, ordering stock and getting things sent over from Greece, but I’m genuinely loving being in the shop and meeting new people.”

Perhaps the most meaningful part has been hearing the same sentiment repeated by customers walking through the doors, Adelaide needed somewhere like this. Locals have told Anna they have been waiting for a Greek shop where they can browse a little bit of everything, rather than searching across different stores or waiting for the next festival to come around.

There is already more on the way, with new stock expected to arrive in the coming months as Anna turns her attention towards the store’s first Christmas.

It is a milestone that would have seemed a long way away when The Greek Warehouse was being run secretly behind closed doors.

Now, the secret is very much out, and Adelaide couldn’t be happier.
