FIRST LOOK: Urban Desserts opens new Morphett Vale spot with delectable high-end sweet treats at affordable prices

2024 Pastry Chef of the Year and Great Australian Bake Off star Jeremy Allan opens new store for Urban Desserts, indulgent chocolate, fresh fruit and awesome cookies are available

Known for his stunning desserts, not only visually but by taste, the Great Australian Bake Off star Jeremy Allan has been selling out of desserts since 2018, and that journey has lead him to his current store that opened just a few weeks ago.

Since 2008 Jeremy knew he loved baking by creating his daughter’s birthday cakes, that journey then took him to the Great Australian Bake Off in 2016. This sparked his passion for pastries and embarked on a patisserie course in Melbourne in 2017.

“I’ve been a welder and I’ve been a machinist for years prior to taking on more of this patisserie style of style work,” said Jeremy.

“Now I’m out of the ceiling industry. I can really lean into what my heart desires, which is the creation of a new element or a new dessert.”

With his new passion Jeremy hit the McLaren Vale Night Markets with a stall and would continually sell out. Urban Desserts now had its own brand and fan-base. That early success prompted the move into a permanent space, opening a kitchen and retail premises in Morphett Vale on Acre Avenue in 2020. Then Jeremy opened by a Glenelg store in 2021, which later closed due to COVID-19 impacts.

The business then operated a kiosk at Colonnades Shopping Centre from July 2023, but rising costs saw it close earlier this year. 2024 was a huge year where Jeremy was has been crowned the 2024 Pastry Chef of the Year at the ACADA Australasian Cake Oscar Awards. Which takes us to now! Just two doors down from the kitchen Urban Desserts has a new store.

Urban Desserts has a rotating menu because of product stock but the core range of Citron and Lemon Cheesecake are always around. Jeremy titles the desserts as petit gâteaux, which means small cake in French. They are small desserts usually with a mouse and flavours can range to fresh fruit or indulgent rich chocolate.

The success of Urban Desserts isn’t just the two core range items, but also the affordability and that they cater to almost everybody. Jeremy said he ensures there is at least one vegan item, plus 75% of the desserts are Gluten-free.

“I lean into different colours and creativity,” said Jeremy.

“I do a lot of fruit based desserts, and I really focus on the creativity that we can flex within our designs.”
