Foodbank is the largest food relief organisation in South Australia, providing food relief to more than 135,000 South Australians every month. One-third of these are children.

The esteemed South Australian organisation that provides a vital lifeline for struggling residents acknowledges COVID-19 has had a negative effect on many South Aussies, meaning their services are more crucial than ever.

In 2021, more than 1 in 6 South Australians experienced food insecurity, with 74,800 SA kids experiencing hunger. Without Foodbank, these South Australians wouldn’t know where their next meal was coming from.

Glam Adelaide spoke to Mandy Hall, Ambassador of Foodbank SA to find out more about the incredible organisation.

“Foodbank SA supply food to feed over 135,000 South Australians, every single month,” she said.

“Foodbank supplies over 80% of the food relief to more than 586 charities (including Puddle Jumpers, Heart and Soul, Kick Start for Kids, Hutt Street to name a few) and supplies  550 school programs, Foodbank also provides a Food Hub model for food relief.”

“There are 9 Food Hubs across the state (including Edwardstown, Woodville, Christie’s Beach, Elizabeth, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier, Whyalla, Central Australia and Ceduna and 2 mobile food hubs) they provide a dignified shopping experience to the most vulnerable in our community.,” Mandy continued.

Foodbank is the official disaster charity for food in SA, meaning the demand for food is always unknown as food shortages could strike at any time.

Mandy explained to GLAM how South Aussies can give.

“Hunger fighters on a mission to rescue food can donate” …

  • Short coded product
  • Excess product
  • Product not meeting retailer specification
  • Discontinued product
  • Product requiring relabelling
  • Under or overweight product

“To any of the Foodbank warehouses here in South Australia.”

Mandy continued “we have very limited funding, so any donations are greatly appreciated.”

Due to the tireless work of volunteers and the generous donations from the community this Christmas Foodbank SA will distribute more than 11,500 Christmas hampers right across the state!

“As South Australians, we should be very very proud of the amazing work Foodbank does. ”

“I’m incredibly passionate about being an ambassador of this incredible organisation.”

For every $1 donated to Foodbank SA, they will put 2 meals on the table this Christmas. With 100% of every $1 donated going directly to buying food for those in need. Donations can be made at www.foodbanksa.org.au/donate
