The State Library of South Australia is again teaming up with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF)
to host a Great Book Swap on Wednesday, 4 September, 2024. As part of Indigenous Literacy Day, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Last year’s Great Book Swap was a success, and this year will follow suit: Everyone is welcome to visit the Library to browse the bookstall and take a book in exchange for a note or gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, enabling them to provide new books to remote Indigenous Communities. Access to books in remote areas can be difficult, as libraries or bookstores are rare, and the event will hopefully help to improve accessibility.

The State Library of South Australia Director says, “We are proud to be part of the Great Book Swap
again this year. This event not only promotes literacy but also bridges the gap for children in
remote Indigenous Communities, ensuring they have access to the books and stories that can
inspire and empower them.”

Around 50% of the books chosen by the ILF are by Indigenous authors or illustrators, and this representation helps the children to see themselves and their culture within the stories they love. In turn this will help to build a sense of connection, belonging, and pride.

“We’d love to see lots of people visit the Library and help us to beat last year’s total of $1700.
Together, we can make a difference for a more inclusive future,” the Library Director adds.

If you can’t make it on the day, you can still donate on the State Library of South Australia’s Great Book Swap donation page.
