A Henley Beach couple who have spent a lifetime playing the lottery are suddenly $1 million richer, and their first priority is making life a little easier for their children.
The Adelaide residents held the only division one winning entry nationally in Weekday Windfall draw 4749 on Monday, August 31.
While there are holidays and perhaps a few more comfortable flights now on the horizon, the couple said their immediate plan was to surprise their children by paying off their mortgages.
“We’ve already decided we’re going to pay our children’s mortgages off. We’re going to see them for lunch and surprise them,” the winning wife said.
The win comes after years of regular entries, although remarkably, the couple had only recently changed the numbers they usually played.
“We’ve been playing all our life, but we only recently changed our numbers to family birthdays,” the winning husband said.
“We saw it last night, but we didn’t want to get too excited. This is amazing.”
Confirmation of the $1 million prize prompted plenty of emotion the following morning.
“God, almighty! You’re a champion! Isn’t that a life-changer?” the husband laughed.
“What a way to start the day. We’ve got goosebumps and tears and all of it. That’s sensational news.”
Once the family surprise has been delivered, travel is next on the agenda for the Henley Beach pair.
“We’re also travellers ourselves so we’ll go on some more holidays. Maybe instead of squeezing into economy, we’ll upgrade our flights!” the winning wife said.
Their marked System 7 entry was purchased at South Henley Newsagency on Henley Beach Road in Henley Beach South.
Owner Avi Kashyap along with Raj, said the team was thrilled to discover the store had sold the winning entry after operating in the area for 25 years.
“We’re feeling so proud to sell a division one winning entry,” he said.
“A massive thanks to all the community who continue to shop at their local news agent.”
The winning numbers were 29, 2, 31, 1, 25 and 24, with supplementary numbers 7 and 37.
It was the only division one winning entry nationally in Monday night’s Weekday Windfall draw.
The result brings The Lott’s division one tally for 2026 to 248, including 23 wins secured by SA Lotteries customers.
