A Prospect community space has officially been given a facelift, with the completion of the Matthews Park Upgrade bringing improved play areas, better landscaping and modern facilities to locals.

Located on the corner of Struan Avenue and Moore Street, Matthews Park has undergone a major transformation as part of the City of Prospect’s Open Space Strategy, with the redevelopment focused on creating a more welcoming and accessible outdoor space for the entire community.

Following two rounds of community consultation in 2023 and 2024, the upgrade was shaped around feedback from locals to make sure the refreshed park reflected the needs and wants of the community.

Delivered in partnership with LCS Landscape, the project has now officially reached completion, with temporary fencing installed around the park in late February to support safety and security throughout construction.

The upgraded park now offers a range of new features designed to encourage recreation, connection and outdoor play.

Families can enjoy brand-new play equipment, including an all-accessible basket swing and nature play elements, providing more inclusive opportunities for children of different abilities to explore and have fun.

A new small cycle track has also been introduced, giving younger riders a dedicated space to build confidence while enjoying time outdoors.

For those looking to relax and spend more time in the park, new shade sails, seating areas, picnic settings and shelters create the perfect spaces to kick back and relax.

The upgrade has also delivered significant improvements to the park’s sporting facilities, including new tennis court fencing and the introduction of a public ‘book-a-court’ system. The new system will allow members of the community to reserve court time, making the facilities easier and more convenient to access.

Accessibility has been a key focus throughout the redevelopment, with new DDA-compliant pathways improving movement through the park and ensuring more people can enjoy the space comfortably.

The landscape has also been updated with expanded turf areas, new irrigation infrastructure and additional plantings, including trees and garden beds, helping create a greener and more inviting environment.

The community is invited to celebrate the finished project at the official opening on Sunday, September 13th from 11am to 1pm.
