Jacinda Ardern Holds Press Conference Following National Cabinet Meeting

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern held a press conference after joining a meeting of the Australian National Cabinet to discuss COVID-19 & the future of the two countries.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern held a press conference after joining a meeting of the Australian National Cabinet. The last New Zealand PM to participate in anything similar was Peter Fraser who attended meetings of Australia’s War Cabinet during the Second World War.

As the cabinet meeting is still underway she was hesitant to discuss anything in detail, but she wanted to stress the importance of the Australian & New Zealand relationship, with indications that travel between the two countries was on the horizon.

The NZ Prime Minister mentioned that their country has had two days, COVID-free, while Australia has had some more new cases crop up in an outbreak in Victoria, so restrictions were still crucial.

She acknowledged that New Zealand has the second highest number of visitors to Australia after China, with 1.2m visitors to Australia last year, and reciprocally, 1.6m Aussies visited NZ. Export and trade between the counties is also strong, and essential.

Arden said their intention was to issue a statement once Australia’s National Cabinet Meeting concludes, to share outcomes of that meeting.
