Kangaroo Island’s American River will come to life this winter, with a roaming seafood feast set to bring together fresh local produce, open-fire cooking and some of South Australia’s best culinary talent.
On Saturday, August 29th, Smoke on the Water will transform the waterfront at KI Oysters into a seafood dinner led by acclaimed South Australian chef Kane Pollard, in collaboration with PLACE Dining.
Set against the waters of American River, the intimate event will showcase the region’s top seafood, with guests invited to enjoy a four-course feast celebrating the flavours of Kangaroo Island.
The menu will hero KI Oysters, harvested just metres from where they will be served, with guests treated to fresh, smoked and flame-grilled oysters cooked live over an open fire.
The feast will also feature miso-grilled squid, a hearty seafood chowder, and a honey and saltbush s’more to finish, with each course paired alongside wines from Spring Seed Wine and False Cape Wine.
“American River has some of the best oysters in the country, and this event is about celebrating that, cooking them the way they deserve, right where they’re grown, over an open fire,” said Chef Kane Pollard.
Running from 1pm to 4pm, Smoke on the Water will offer guests the chance to slow down, settle in and enjoy the island’s famous produce while taking in waterfront views.
While destinations like Kingscote and Penneshaw often welcome first-time visitors to Kangaroo Island, American River offers a quieter escape, surrounded by oyster leases and an abundant birdlife.
The event also provides the perfect excuse for a winter island getaway, with Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge offering guests a special accommodation deal for the weekend.
Visitors staying a minimum of two nights can use code MKI20 when booking to receive 20 per cent off their stay, giving guests the chance to arrive on Friday, enjoy Smoke on the Water on Saturday, and spend Sunday exploring the island’s beaches, wildlife and food and wine experiences.
