A popular family-run Greek deli is leaving its original Duthy Street home and preparing to open a larger store in Mile End, with an expanded range of imported groceries, frozen foods and traditional meals made in-house.
Eleni’s Kouzina & Grocer operated on Duthy Street for three and a half years after opening in 2023, but owner Eleni said the business had simply run out of room.
“We want to expand our grocery lines and our frozen foods,” Eleni said.
“A lot of our grocery products are from Greece, and we want to expand all that.”
The new store will open at Shops 1 and 2, 34 Henley Beach Road, Mile End, in the group of shops opposite the Mile End Hotel and near Una Cafe.
The larger premises will allow Eleni’s to stock a broader range of premium Greek products, many of which are currently difficult to find elsewhere in South Australia.
Eleni said many of its specialist products are currently exclusive to the business in Adelaide.
The grocer’s range includes extra virgin olive oils, Greek biscuits, pasta, organic herbs, jams, capsicum spreads, cheeses and other pantry products sourced directly from Greece through a Melbourne supplier.
The business also exclusively stocks Alexakis pita bread, while Eleni’s husband distributes several of its imported products to other stores.
“At the new store, we’re going to have a wider range of products as well,” Eleni said.
The expansion will also make room for more frozen products, including Greek sausages, vegetables, seafood and pita bread, alongside Eleni’s own ready-made meals.
Everything on the house-made menu is prepared by the team, including moussaka, pastitsio, gemista, dolmades and traditional Greek cakes.
The business is also known for its lamb and chicken yiros, meat packs and marinated meats.
Eleni said one of the key principles behind the kitchen was its commitment to cooking without seed oils.
“We only use extra virgin olive oil in all our cooking, and we’re not using any seed oils in our store,” she said.
“My husband also marinates all his meats in extra virgin olive oil, and our chips are cooked in tallow.”
The Mile End store is currently undergoing renovations, with an expected opening date in four to six weeks.
