To the ancient Greeks, the Muses were goddesses who embodied the essence of poetry, lyric, music and myth. Muse Festival pays homage to three modern-day musical goddesses Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks.
Muse is a collaboration between three of Adelaide’s premier quality cabaret producers Louise McCabe (Guilty Pleasures Shows), Deborah Brennan (Court & Spark Productions) and Emma Gordon-Smith (Inner Rhythm Productions) and features six events – two performances of three different shows – across the first weekend in September at Adelaide’s favourite cabaret and music venue, Nexus Arts.
A Case of You: The Music of Joni Mitchell features cabaret songbird and storyteller Deborah Brennan as she cleverly crafts Joni Mitchell’s songbook into a memorable soundtrack of her own life, wrapped in a contemporary story of free-spirited travel, love and reflection.
In Wild Heart: The Life of Stevie Nicks powerhouse singer Emma Gordon-Smith and her slick six-piece band delivers an uncanny portrayal of rock’n’roll mystic poet Stevie Nicks, as she delves into the dreams and nightmares of the songstress gypsy.
A Deal With God: The Songs of Kate Bush stars ethereal Welsh vocalist, Siobhan Owen, supported by backing vocalists and an outstanding band, as they pay homage to Kate Bush’s greatest hits – plus some of her lesser-known masterpieces.
The festival has been inspired by a respect for each artists’ contribution to the music industry. Each woman’s unique poetry, musicianship, vocals and performance style has given voice to generations of women’s deepest feelings and desires – and inspired countless other artists.
Audience members can buy a single ticket or 2-show and 3-show passes at a discount rate. Muse takes place over the first weekend of spring (Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September) at Nexus Arts, Lions Art Centre, North Tce, Adelaide.
See one, two or all three muses over the weekend – the choice is yours.
