Iconic foothills venue Utopia at Waterfall Gully is entering a huge new chapter under the new ownership of long time hospitality guru Karen Pattison.
Under Karen’s direction, Utopia is entering a new chapter she calls ‘Nutopia’, an all-day brunch, dining, and event destination. And don’t worry though, the long-held branding ‘Utopia’ will live on.
Karen, who has worked in function coordination and restaurants for 28 years, took over Utopia after consulting for the previous owners. She describes the decision as a “plunge” she couldn’t resist. “I’ve worked here on and off for years, and when I saw it was at risk of closing, I thought, no, we can’t let that happen,” she says.
Karen emphasises that while the venue will receive a much-needed facelift, with internal refurbishments being made throughout the property, the heritage and natural beauty of the site will remain central. “We want to honour the history while gently guiding it forward. The waterfalls, walking trails, and wildlife are part of the rhythm of the place. It’s about slowing down and enjoying your surroundings,” she says.
The changes at Utopia are wide-ranging but thoughtfully designed to enhance the guest experience while preserving the venue’s heritage and natural beauty. Here’s how Karen concisely expresses her vision: New management, new vision, new menu, Nutopia. “Some of my friends have said it’s a bit cheesy,” Karen laughs. “But I think it’s cute. It’s a good framing for me to work with.”
A new food truck at the base of the stairs will trade seven days a week from 7am until lunchtime, serving Juice Quest organic juices, Patio Coffee, bottled water, healthy snacks, and a few indulgent treats. It’s aimed at capturing the bustling morning and lunchtime crowd while offering a convenient takeaway option for walkers and locals.
“Having a food truck down there is going to be a great tool for us as well. We can actually speak directly to people coming past and get feedback while also telling them about everything else we’ve got going on.”
Inside, the restaurant will focus on all-day brunch and dining, with a simple, locally focused menu crafted from fresh regional ingredients. Guests can expect a mix of funky brunch options, elegant high teas, and personalised menus for celebrations, all designed to keep things fresh, seasonal, and approachable.
Karen says the team behind the menu is just as carefully considered. “Rather than having one main head chef, we’ve gone a different direction. Our pastry chef is amazing and will focus on desserts and high teas. That’s her jam, no pun intended. Then our former head chef, who I’ve known for about 20 years, will stay on, so between the two of them, I’ve got the perfect chef. They work really well together, sticking to their strengths, and I think it’s going to work fantastically.”
Utopia will continue to host weddings and events, offering flexible spaces for smaller, more intimate weddings, as well as larger celebrations for up to 170 stand-up guests. Outdoor areas are being refreshed to better showcase the surrounding waterfalls, walking trails, and wildlife.
“We’ve still got the beautiful little ceremony area as well, which does half the work for us just by having such a gorgeous building. You can have everything in one spot.”
While we spoke, Karen described what she was looking at: “Usually when I get here in the late afternoon, we’ve got a couple of local magpies, some crows, and these beautiful little blue birds. I just put out some food on either side of the stairs and they’re sitting there looking at me, watching to see if I’m ready to feed them. It’s just so peaceful. There’s something really special about being surrounded by that wildlife every day.”
With a rich history dating back to 1912 as one of Australia’s last remaining National Pleasure Resorts, Utopia was originally designed as a premium leisure destination where visitors could escape the city, enjoy the waterfalls and walking trails, and celebrate special occasions. Today, it has become one of the most beautiful event spaces in the state, just a short drive from the CBD, and we’re so happy to see that legacy continued.
The re-launch will take place on Sunday, 22 March, with the venue open to the public from Wednesday, 25 March. With new management, new menus, a new vision, and a nod to its storied past, Utopia is ready to welcome a new era of visitors from an owner who truly loves the space.
