Premier announces $51.6M support package for Riverland and flood-affected communities

Families affected by large-scale flooding will be eligible for financial grants as well as emergency accommodation.

South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas has just announced a $51.6M financial support package for Riverland and flood-affected communities along the river.

Families affected by large-scale flooding will be eligible for grants of up to $1000 with individual residents who have been displaced from their homes will have access to up to $400.

Those who have been forced from their homes will be offered up to 14 days of emergency accommodation while rental assistance for uninsured residents will be available of up to $2000 for singles and $5000 for families.

Business closure grants of up to $20,000 were also announced along with generator purchase grants of up to $4000 for businesses and households who have been left without power.

Mr Malinauskas addressed the media following a substantial meeting with a range of local Riverland governments to announce the aid.

“This package aims to address concerns around levies and we’re seeking to support those businesses that are most affected,” he said.

“We want to provide support for households, particularly the number of people that do face the prospect of having to evacuate their own homes. But, we also want to make sure that the state government stands ready to support those industries that will be affected hardest as a result of this emergency.”

“We know that once the water subsides, which will happen in due course, that we have got a lot of work to do in front of us to suppor those industries that have been hardest hit.”

The nine local council areas that are eligible for the disaster funding are Alexandrina Council, Berri Barmera Council, Coorong District Council, District Council of Karoonda East Murray, District Council of Loxton Waikerie, Mid Murray Council, Murray Bridge Council, Pastoral Unincorporated Area and Renmark Paringa Council.

The announcement comes as the Riverland prepares for conditions to worsen over the coming weeks with flood levels set to peak in early December and then again mid-December.

“We’re seeking to get ahead of the game as best we can,” Mr Malinauskas said.
