SA’s Wintulichs Smallgoods recently took home four gold medals and the title of Australia’s Best Double Smoked Slicing Ham at the National AMIC Charcuterie Awards in Sydney. This the prestigious event, known as the pinnacle for smallgoods and charcuterie in Australia, honoured Wintulichs Smallgoods as the National Category Champions for their standout slicing ham.

Not only did Wintulichs Smallgoods win big, they took to their Facebook page to share an even greater achievement: “We’re so proud of our team for achieving industry recognition for excellence, across so many products – from Wintulichs traditional products, to new products we’ve created this year.

“The biggest cheer in the room on the night was reserved for our senior Smallgoods Maker, Emma Robertson, as the only female smallgoods maker to walk on the stage to receive our award for having the BEST PRODUCT IN AUSTRALIA in our category.”

Head judge and Chairman of the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC’s) National Smallgoods Council, Franz Knoll along with industry leader Paul Sandercock confirm that Emma Robertson is the first qualified woman to win a major AMIC smallgoods award in Australia.

Amanda, from Wintulichs Smallgoods was immensely proud. “She was the only women to go up on stage. The cry from the crowd, the women saw another woman go up on stage and it suddenly got louder and louder,” Amanda says.

This year, the team from Wintulichs Smallgoods wanted to make their mark.

“We said lets go bigger, lets go harder and we entered eighteen of our products and won sixteen awards of some description, we were very pleased!” Amanda says.

The SA brand received gold awards for their Long Bacon Belly, Hot Chilli Jerky, Chicken & Bacon Kransky, and of course, their Double Smoked Slicing Ham.

Keeping things local, the brand is known for providing unique flavours created through their smoking process with European smoke ovens. Using red gum from the Barossa Valley, this choice of material does not overwhelm the flavour of the meat, but provides a light smokiness that only adds to the locality of Wintulichs Smallgoods products.

“Our business is 114 years old, 1909 in Tununda. Smoking with red gum, in our living memory, is what the products were smoked with. Its continuing the tradition, were keeping it the same,” Amanda says.

With their products available in retailers such as Drake’s, Foodland, Woolworths, and IGA, the team remain local and are operating from Gawler, using premium ingredients to produce 100% gluten free smallgoods for all to enjoy.

They aim stick to tradition, but are innovating with new products and are shifting the standards and expectations of the industry – not only filling our stomachs but warming our hearts.

Other South Australian brands came out on top at the 2024 Australian Charcuterie Excellence Awards, clinching top honours in four major categories. With familiar brands like Barossa Fine Foods, Mike’s Beef Jerky, and Skara Smallgoods, SA stood out strong during the event.
