The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds and large hailstones, affecting residents across various districts in South Australia including Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Mid North, Murraylands, and Riverland.

The warning was released at 5:23pm on Wednesday, October 16th 2024, highlighting a critical weather event with potentially significant impacts due to the severe weather conditions brewing east of Adelaide. Meteorological analysis points to a warm and unstable airmass across the eastern half of the state, spurred by a trough, catalysing the formation of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Residents in the identified districts, especially in areas around Murray Bridge, Gawler, Karoonda, and Mannum, are advised to brace for potentially hazardous weather conditions. The ensuing hours are likely to witness thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds exceeding usual speeds and hailstones of considerable size. Such weather phenomena can cause extensive damage to properties and pose risks to personal safety.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Secure or put away loose items around your property.
* Move cars under cover or away from trees.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.

The Bureau of Meteorology has scheduled the next update on the situation for 8:25pm.
