Sister-run Adelaide café takes iced coffee to the extreme with -85°C frozen latte

Two Sisters café brings to Adelaide the it summer drink with an icy twist, in not one but three different flavours to choose from. But how does it work?

Think your iced coffee is cold? One Adelaide cafe is taking things considerably further, serving its latest Dirty Latte at a staggering -85°C.

Two Sisters Café in Woodville is putting a seriously icy spin on the usual caffeine hit, with three ultra-frozen latte flavours that combine Japanese-inspired ingredients with coffee and matcha.

Sisters Angella and Candra moved from Sydney to Adelaide in 2021 with the goal of owning their own café. In October 2024, they took over the Woodville venue, transforming the previously closed space into Two Sisters Café, where Japanese-inspired flavours sit alongside coffee, matcha and pastries.

Now, the sisters are bringing an unusual overseas coffee trend to Adelaide with their ultra-frozen lattes, available in pistachio matcha, Earl Grey Hojicha and Dirty Single O.

“This popular overseas trend originated from a cafe in Hong Kong, but because we can’t travel that far, we decided to visit one of the cafes that do similar things in Melbourne,” Angella said.

The unusual drinks have already attracted attention on social media, with curious customers keen to see how the frosty creations work.

And it seems some are becoming regulars, returning to try different flavours.

“A lot of people actually come back the next day just to have the same flavour. Every time they’re coming back to the shop, I always try to offer a different flavour, that way they can try everything,” Angella said.

So, how does it work?

The process starts with glasses chilled to a staggering -85°C in an ultra-freezer. Milk is then poured into the icy glass, instantly freezing around the edges while leaving the centre liquid.

Next comes the coffee or matcha, often poured over a spoon to create a striking contrast between the hot espresso and the freezing milk.

The result is a drink that offers more than just a caffeine hit, with the preparation itself becoming part of the experience.

Angella said customers had responded positively to both the unusual presentation and the flavours.

“Customers did mention that this will be their go-to option when they come. Not only because of the experience but also because of the flavour profile itself that is unique and perfect for summer,” she said.

The café also puts an emphasis on its ingredients, using Single O coffee beans, a brand the sisters admire for its sustainability efforts and support of local communities. They also work with local suppliers, including Fleurieu Milk for their Jersey milk.

While the ultra-frozen lattes might be the latest talking point, there is plenty more on offer at Two Sisters Café, which describes itself as a place “where modern Japanese cuisine meets delicious coffee and pastries”.

And there is no need to rush in before the trend disappears. The ultra-frozen drinks are now a permanent fixture on the menu, with flavours changing seasonally.

For Adelaide coffee lovers keen to try something a little different, this might be one icy caffeine hit worth seeking out.
