The ‘Banh Mi Banger’ is a new SA collab between the classic Aussie sausage sizzle and an Asian favourite

Two South Aussie businesses have teamed up to create the Banh Mi Banger, a new menu item combining a Barossa sausage with banh mi ingredients.

A South Australian food collaboration is putting a fun spin on the classic Aussie sausage sizzle, with Soonta and Barossa Fine Foods joining forces to create the brand new Banh Mi Banger.

The new menu item combines a Barossa Fine Foods sausage with Soonta’s signature banh mi ingredients and two specially developed sauces, bringing together the familiar flavours of a hot dog with the freshness and crunch of the Asian fusion-inspired favourite.

The collaboration builds on a long-standing relationship between the two South Australian businesses, with Barossa Fine Foods already one of Soonta’s key suppliers, and will be available for one month for $8.90.

Soonta’s Director of Business Development Dale said, “Our team at Soonta and the guys from Barossa Fine Foods came up with the name Banh Mi Banger, and we thought it was perfect. It’s a fun banh mi hot dog that brings together a classic Aussie banger and Soonta’s Asian fusion flavours.”

For Dale, the appeal is in the contrast between the two main elements, with the sausage bringing a rich, savoury flavour while the banh mi ingredients add freshness, crunch and brightness.

Developing the final combination involved plenty of taste-testing and tweaking, with Dale and Jeremy from Barossa Fine Foods working together to get the balance right.

“We wanted the sausage to stand out while still giving customers the flavour and freshness they associate with Soonta,” said Dale. “Jeremy from Barossa Fine Foods and I tasted and tested it together many times, sharing feedback and refining the combination along the way. From my business development perspective, it also mattered that the finished product would be something our teams could prepare consistently across our stores.”

The two specially created sauces were also designed to bring everything together without overpowering the sausage or the other ingredients.

The collaboration highlights the relationship between two local food businesses and the opportunities that can come from working together.

“South Australia has a food community with a lot of talent and pride in what we produce. Collaborations give brands the opportunity to share ideas, introduce their customers to each other and create something they might not have developed on their own. Working in business development, I really value those relationships. It’s exciting to see local businesses helping each other grow.”

The Banh Mi Banger is expected to arrive at Soonta stores across South Australia on October 15th, giving customers the chance to try the new combination for themselves.

And there could be more collaborations on the horizon, with Soonta also exploring a potential partnership with a bubble tea brand.

For now, the Banh Mi Banger is bringing two South Australian brands together over the simple idea of taking a familiar favourite and giving it a distinctly Soonta twist.
