When Mathew Leckie scored that goal in the 60th minute, everything changed, and so to the potential to change Australian football.
Coming into the cup as underdogs, Australia was seen as “timid”, but they decided to prove the opposite with a rousing performance this morning.
Led by central defender Harry Souttar, Australia defended for its life to move through to the knockout stage for just the second time at the World Cup.
It is a result almost nobody saw coming.
However, as South Australians, we do have even more to be excited about. Our very own Adelaide United Captain, Craig Goodwin is a part of the 26-man squad.
Goodwin has been quoted saying that this opportunity has been the proudest moment of his life and that he thanks his loved ones for getting him to this point.
After Australia secured a gutsy 1-0 triumph over Tunisia in their last outing, the Socceroos have dared to dream as they headed into the final Group D match against Denmark at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.
The Euro 2020 semifinalists also failed to secure a victory in their opener against Tunisia, which finished 0-0. However, many will be expecting them to show up in a do-or-die clash.
This is the second meeting between these two sides at the World Cup after they played out a 1-1 group-stage draw in 2018. Overall, Australia have only beaten Denmark once in four meetings.
It is also the first time Australia has ever won back-to-back matches at the World Cup.
The Socceroos have now advanced through to the knockout rounds being a part of the final 16.
