Statewide Code Blue activated as severe winter weather hits SA

A statewide Code Blue response has been activated to help people sleeping rough stay warm, dry and safe during severe winter conditions.

A statewide Code Blue extreme winter weather response has been activated across South Australia to support people sleeping rough during severe winter conditions.

The activation is in place from 8am today until 8am on Tuesday 7 July, with additional support available through homelessness services and their partner organisations.

Anyone who is sleeping rough, or who knows someone in need of support, is encouraged to contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308. The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can advise what support may be available.

As part of the Code Blue response, services across the state may increase daytime operating hours and staffing, extend street outreach, promote existing services more widely, and provide practical aid such as clothing, water, food and blankets.

Safe places to temporarily seek refuge from extreme weather during the day may also be made available. Overnight accommodation may be available depending on the region.

Human Services Minister Katrine Hildyard said the statewide activation was designed to reduce the risks faced by people without a safe place to sleep.

“We know severe weather conditions can create heightened and increased risk for community members sleeping rough. This statewide activation is about giving people somewhere warm and safe to stay, along with other practical support they need during these extreme conditions,” Minister Hildyard said.

“We want to help make sure that South Australians are not left exposed during this harsh winter weather. A Code Blue response means additional outreach, support and emergency accommodation are in place for people without a safe place to sleep.

“This is about getting more support to the people who need us the most.

“Thanks to the kind and hardworking people across the homelessness sector who are there for those needing a hand.”

The most up-to-date information on the current activation is available through the SA Government’s homelessness support page.
