Sunrise legend Mark Beretta to share stories from 35 years in sport and television at exclusive Showcase SA long lunch

After 22 years behind the sports desk on Australia’s most-watched breakfast show, “Beretts” is stepping out for an afternoon of stories, straight talk and long lunch conversation at SkyCity’s The District, hosted by Showcase SA.

Some people spend a career telling other people’s stories. Mark Beretta OAM has spent more than 35 years doing exactly that, and this August he is taking the time to tell some of his own.

This Friday, August 21, Showcase SA is hosting Beyond the Broadcast, an exclusive lunch with one of Australia’s most recognisable sports broadcasters.

Held at The District at SkyCity Adelaide, the sit-down afternoon is open to anyone who wants a seat at the table, not just Showcase SA members.

If you have watched Sunrise at any point in the last two decades, you know the face. Beretta was the sports presenter on Australia’s number one breakfast television program for 22 years, part of a broadcasting career spanning more than three decades with the Seven Network.

He has covered 13 Olympic Games, along with the Australian Open, Melbourne Cup, Tour Down Under, Bathurst and Supercars. He is also the only Australian to have served as MC at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.

What makes him an interesting lunch guest, though, is everything that sits underneath the television career.

Before the cameras, Beretta was a ten-time Australian water ski champion and former US record holder. He is an engineering graduate who worked with BHP and Honeywell before moving into media, and is also a Major in the Army Reserve.

As a board member of Tour de Cure, he has also been involved in an effort that has raised more than $160 million for cancer research, work that earned him the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021.

That combination of elite sport, live broadcasting and community work will form part of the conversation on the day.

Expect stories from some of the biggest sporting events in the world, alongside lessons from more than three decades in a very public career, from performing under pressure and holding your nerve on live television to resilience and reinvention.

There will also be a Q&A, giving guests the chance to put their own questions to Beretta.

The afternoon runs from midday to 2.30pm and includes a two-course sit-down lunch.

Showcase SA’s long lunches are as much about the people around the table as the speaker at the front, making this one to bring the team along to or use as an excuse to catch up with clients. Tables of ten are also available.

And there is a special offer for Glam Adelaide readers.

Use the code GLAM50$ at checkout to receive $50 off your ticket, bringing an individual ticket down to $200 plus GST. The discount also applies to tables of ten.

So, who is Showcase SA?

If you have not come across Showcase SA before, it is an independent South Australian business community now in its eighth year, bringing businesses from across the state together through more than 50 events each year.

Its calendar ranges from long lunches and closed-door roundtables with state and federal ministers to behind-the-scenes tours, masterclasses and other networking events.

That has included access to places such as the R.M. Williams factory floor, as well as opportunities for business owners to connect directly with industry leaders, decision-makers and other South Australian organisations.
