Vinteloper a Finalist in Young Gun of Wine Award

David Bowley, the winemaking; coffee drinking; skateboard designing, DJ from Magill in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide has created something of a stir in wine circles in the past couple of years, and now he’s really made good, being named a finalist for the groundbreaking Young Gun of Wine Award 2011.

Now in its fifth year, this highly anticipated award lifts the lid on Australia’s best emerging young winemakers in a race that not only celebrates the quality of the liquid in the glass, but also captures the individual’s influence on their peers through their originality, direction and leadership.

The Awards have become recognised as the barometer of emerging talent, trends and wine styles and are judged by a panel that includes industry stalwarts Max Allen, Nick Stock and Philip Rich.

Chief Judge, Nick Stock says each year the task of both selecting the finalists and the eventual winner has become more and more challenging.

“These guys and girls are singled out for their leadership, vision, talent and their influence on the cutting edge of the industry, an influence that has steadily grown each year.”

Mr Bowley – known affectionately as “Vinteloper” to many, said the nomination was “humbling”.

“As a solo winemaker I’m also the accountant; delivery driver; director of marketing; vineyard manager; and chief label applicator… wine is my life, I’m obsessed with it and I guess that obsession has paid off.”

“I’m just humbled that my limited production South Australian wines and the instinctive nature by which I run my marketing have been catching the eye of industry leaders. The festival will be a chance to celebrate that and spread the love, no matter the result.”

This year’s finalists span the country and include Adam Wadewitz (Best’s), Alex Head (Head Wines), Andrew Marks (Wanderer), Dylan McMahon (Seville Estate), Elena Golakova-Brooks (Dandelion & Cien Y Pico), Mike Aylward (Ocean Eight), Nick Glaetzer (Glaetzer-Dixon), Nick Spencer (Eden Road Wines), Rory Lane (The Story) and Sam Wigan (Running With Bulls). Two awards are given. The People’s Choice Award and the overall Young Gun of Wine.

The Young Guns of Wine Festival runs from August 15 – 22 at various locations and The Young Gun of Wine Award winners will be announced Monday August 22.
