This British comedy by director Jonathon Lynn (The Whole Nine Yards) is based on the 1993 French film Cible Emouvante.

Victor Maynard (Bill Nighty) is a 50 year old single hit man carrying on the family business under the steely gaze of his domineering mother Louisa (Eileen Atkins).  Regarded as top in his field he is hired by Ferguson (Rupert Everett) to kill Rose (Emily Blunt) after she swindles him out of 900,000 with fake art.   However Victor fails in his attempt and becomes attracted to his victim instead.  At his mother’s insistence he tries again only to thwart Ferguson’s men attempting to kill Rose, with help from innocent bystander Tony (Rupert Grint) who now must join them in hiding.  This unlikely trio band together and homeless Tony finally finds a family he can call his own.

This is a very funny film and yet not conventional which is likely due to its european origins.  Bill Nighty (Love Actually) is perfect as the obsessive compulsive, mama’s boy assassin driven by his need for order and cleanliness.  Emily Blunt (Devil wears Prada) is well cast as the dysfunctional con artist who undergoes a personal transformation onto the path of contentment.  Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) has manage to cast his Ron Weasly alter image and rounds out this trio of misfits, who just bounce off each other seamlessly.  Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park) steals every scene she is in as the mother who doesn’t know when to let go. Martin Freeman (Love Actually) has a small part as his rival assasin Hector Dixon.  There are even a few surprises in this story which is nice to see amongst the predictability of most comedies.
