Afro-centric steak restaurant the Meat & Wine Co opens in Adelaide

Venture to the Adelaide location to enjoy the steak spot’s top quality meats and wine.

Top-grade steak spot The Meat & Wine Co has opened in Adelaide, marking the restaurant’s ninth Australian location. The restaurant is sure to break into Adelaide’s dining scene, bringing world-class steak and produce, boutique wines and a unique Afro-centric restaurant design.

“We believe that Adelaide has opportunities within the premium dining sector that we are able to penetrate and fulfill,” Troy Mattingly, the company’s brand manager, says.

“We identified Adelaide as an opportunity for not only The Meat & Wine Co but our other brands within our portfolio to form part of our national growth strategy.”

At the core of The Meat & Wine Co’s menu is a curated offering of top-graded steak. The restaurant’s newest dining experience, AGED, welcomes guests to savour the exceptional taste of expertly dry-aged meat, prepared exclusively in-house. The current flavour is honey and thyme.

“Our AGED program is a new introduction to our extensive meat program this year, incorporating classic dry aging methods along with a butter aging technique developed over the long months of lockdowns,” says Food Manager Thomas Godfrey.

Other menu highlights include boerowers, traditional South African beef sausages with coriander and cumin, served with sweet and sour capsicum and salsa verde, and indulgent dark chocolate fondant, prepared in-house and baked to order.

“The Meat & Wine Co menu is harmonious with the seasons and uses local Australian produce to create dishes that honour our South African heritage,” Godfrey explains.

“We have worked hard over the last year to bring a menu to our guests that is clean and vibrant and pays tribute to seasonal ingredients and is ever-evolving.”

The restaurant also offers a drinks menu featuring bottle and by-the-glass wines from Australia, South Africa and around the globe handpicked by Beverage Manager Ben Preston.

“Our Wine Program has been curated to match our carnivorous menu and to give our customers a far and wide selection of expressive quality,” Preston says.

“But we do love our friends in South Australia, with 18 regions and over 200 cellar doors, it is not hard to understand why South Australia is the wine capital of Oz.”

The restaurant is located in the heritage-listed Elder House on Currie Street in the heart of the CBD. All the The Meat & Wine Co locations take their inspiration from Africa, whilst staying grounded within each site’s unique Australian surroundings and heritage structures.

Callie Van Der Merwe, Designer Architect of Design Partnership Australia shares the experience of transforming the Elder House space.

“It is always great to work on these heritage structures as they have a patina and sense of history and tactility not found in modern structures,” she says.

“As humans we are drawn to them because they are irreplaceable and unique. There is a sense of nostalgia and belonging in a space touched by time and a rich tapestry of real stories.”
