Adelaide’s free City Bikes have seen record hires this year as locals, interstate and international visitors flock to the scheme.

Nearly 10,000 hires have been made this year alone (January to May) according to statistics compiled by Bicycle SA, a 46% increase from the same period last year.

“We’ve got more and more people getting on bikes in Adelaide, with commuters doubling in the past decade” says Christian Haag, CEO of Bicycle SA.

“For those people contemplating buying a bike or getting back in the saddle after many years, the opportunity to come and hire a free bike and ride thorugh Adelaide’s parklands is an absolute ‘try before you buy’ winner.”

First beginning in 2005 with only 20 bikes, Adelaide City Bikes have seen more than 110,000 hires. The scheme now has 220 bikes across 19 different locations. It has been a huge hit with international visitors accounting for 59% of trips, up from 50% at the same time last year.

Participating councils have also found the scheme to be positive.

“Cycling is a healthy, fun, inexpensive way to get around and more people on their bikes will help to ease traffic congestion in our streets and increase awareness of cyclists,” says City of Adelaide Lord Mayor, Stephen Yarwood.

Other participating councils also have enjoyed the bikes in their community.

“The City of Charles Sturt and OPAL have been impressed with the success of the Adelaide City Free Bikes program throughout Charles Sturt,” says Kirsten Alexander, Mayor of the City of Charles Sturt.
