‘A Body at Work’ is stripping down stereotypes at the Adelaide Fringe

Frankie Van Kan embarks on an intimate and vulnerable journey of the sex industry in A Body at Work at this year’s Adelaide Fringe.

In an unprecedented display of vulnerability and raw storytelling, the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2024 is set to host a groundbreaking show that promises to be as enlightening as it is entertaining. ‘A Body at Work’, marks the solo debut of Frankie van Kan, also known as Frankie Valentine, a name that resonates in the realms of Stripped Queer, Club Briefs, Baby Got Back, and Seen & Heard Cabaret.

Directed by the renowned theatre artist Maude Davey, this deeply intimate piece of confessional theatre delves into the life and experiences of van Kan, a queer woman who has spent over sixteen years in the sex industry.

It’s a narrative that is rarely, if ever, brought to the forefront in such a candid manner, with the all-queer crew accompanying Frankie in this production ensuring an authentic and unfiltered exploration of the subject.

The journey begins in the familiar setting of a strip club, offering a fresh and insightful perspective on strip club culture and the intricate power dynamics between workers and clients. Frankie van Kan courageously confronts her own internalised whorephobia and the complexities surrounding the commodification of the body.

Through her engaging storytelling, Frankie navigates the audience through the shifting landscapes of the sex industry, questioning societal perceptions and the intertwining of queerness in her profession. Her journey is not just an exploration but a challenge to the audience, encapsulated in the poignant question, ‘Will they love me at my Madonna when they’ve relished me at my whore?’

Critics have already lauded van Kan’s previous performances, with The Advertiser describing her work as ‘refreshing and undeniably powerful’, and XpressMag.com praising her ‘beautiful moves that work as a vehicle to deliver a powerful message.’

Funded by the Adelaide Fringe Up and Running grant, ‘A Body at Work’ is an opportunity for audiences to gain an insider perspective, challenge their views, and embark on a journey of empowerment and understanding.

Prepare to be captivated, moved, and enlightened as Frankie van Kan exposes more of herself than ever in this remarkable display of artistry and authenticity at Gluttony of the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2024. This is one show you won’t want to miss.
