Electric Circus is getting ready for a new era of Saturday nights filled with underground house music, packed dance-floors and memories that will live forever in your mind, or at least in your camera roll.
The long-running nightclub is returning to its underground roots and reviving dance-floors with longer DJ sets, fewer artists each week and a renewed focus on Adelaide’s house music community.
Theo Jervis, marketing and artist relations coordinator, said the goal is to make Electric Circus a reliable weekly destination where they can share what Adelaide’s pumping house music scene has to offer.
“We wanted there to be a new home for house where people can turn up to the club and know exactly what they’re going to get,” said Theo.
“Let’s go to Electric Circus because it’s going to be what we know, it’s going to be house music.”
Every Saturday for the foreseeable future will be dedicated to house music in its different forms, from soulful grooves to late-night beats, with line-ups combining established Australian names and emerging local artists. The venue also wants the new Saturday format to feel approachable for people who may not regularly attend underground dance events.
“How good … it’s just house music and you go in and have fun. It’s not going to be too loud, too scary or too confronting.”
“You can just go in there and have a good time with your friends.”
Rather than cycling through five or six DJs across one night, Electric Circus is looking to feature two or three artists and give each selector more time to build energy on the dancefloor and get comfy on the decks.
“We believe in letting a DJ settle in and have fun and create a vibe … Creates more of a community.”
“We want to build a crowd who are coming every week because they know it’s a safe space … welcoming new people but also creating a cult following.”
The relaunch is only the beginning of Electric Circus’s next chapter, with the club considering a slight makeover in the near future to mark this new era. It’s been discussed for early next year, with a potential new layout and atmosphere intended to make the venue feel more inclusive and relaxed while maintaining the energetic it’s known for.
The August program begins this Saturday, 1 August, with Bobby Padron and Musch, the creative forces behind Sanctuary, Sidebyside Festival and Places. 8 August is seeing acclaimed Adelaide producer HMC, leading the lineup alongside MRVN. Late Nite Lenny, Gwilym and Elsie Craig will perform 15 August, followed by Aaronac and Sam Walker on 22 August. The month concludes 29 August with SLEEZY and Seb Jay, the team behind Adelaide’s legendary Snake Pit parties.
