It’s hard to picture Adelaide without it, but the city’s much-loved Rundle Mall is officially celebrating its 50th birthday this September.
First opened on September 1st, 1976, by then Premier Don Dunstan, Rundle Mall was Australia’s first purpose-built pedestrian mall. It has since become one of the most recognisable destinations in South Australia and the largest outdoor mall in the Southern Hemisphere.
To celebrate the milestone, Rundle Mall will host six days of celebrations from Tuesday, September 1st to Sunday, September 6th, inviting South Australians to relive old memories while making some new ones.
The official birthday celebrations will kick off at 11am on Tuesday, September 1st at Centre Stage in Gawler Place, with Premier Peter Malinauskas and Adelaide Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith joining MCs Bec Morse and Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello.

Across the week, visitors can expect live music and DJs, free carousel rides, surprise performances, birthday treats and a vintage-style photobooth. Plus, there will be an interactive visual display taking visitors through Rundle Mall’s colourful 50-year history, while the Prosecco Piazza bar will pop up beside the fountain.
Of course, there will be plenty of reasons to shop, with retailers offering special deals and birthday treats throughout the celebrations. And there’s a rather impressive prize up for grabs, too.
Shoppers have the chance to win $50,000 worth of gold bullion, with every $50 spent at participating Rundle Mall businesses between Monday, August 31st and Sunday, September 6th earning one entry into the draw.
Spend more than $100 and shoppers will receive an additional five bonus entries.

There will also be a spectacular 50th Birthday Parade that takes over the heart of Rundle Mall from 5pm. Led by Artistic Director Jo Cassan, the parade will transform the precinct with music, movement and colour as it celebrates the people, places and memories that have shaped Rundle Mall over the past five decades.
“Over the past 50 years, Rundle Mall has welcomed millions of visitors, from South Australia, interstate and overseas, but what makes it special is the individual stories and memories we all have of the Mall,” shared Rundle Mall Executive Manager Andrew White said.
“It might be a first job, a family tradition, a memorable shopping trip, meeting friends at the Balls or simply spending an afternoon in the city. Perhaps not even Don Dunstan, when he opened Rundle Mall back in 1976, could have envisioned that Rundle Mall would evolve to become Australia’s busiest outdoor mall and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It truly is a unique and wonderful place.”
The milestone will also be marked with a new immersive exhibition inside David Jones at Adelaide Central Plaza. Rundle Reflections will run from Tuesday, September 1st to Monday, October 5th, bringing together eight South Australian artists who have been commissioned to create one-of-a-kind works inspired by the history and cultural significance of Rundle Mall, David Jones and Adelaide Central Plaza.
Curated by Eddie Zammit, the free exhibition will also feature rare archival treasures, offering a glimpse into the people, places and moments that have helped shape Adelaide’s retail heart.

While Rundle Mall has changed dramatically since 1976, plenty of its most recognisable icons and memories remain.
From the famous Malls Balls and Magic Cave Christmas displays to first jobs, family shopping trips, city dates, performances and countless catch-ups, the precinct has played a starring role in Adelaide life for generations.
Today, Rundle Mall attracts around 52 million visitors each year, with more than 700 stores and 300 services making it the city’s major retail destination.
Its 50th birthday is set to be less about simply looking back and more about celebrating what makes the Mall such a big part of Adelaide life.
Whether you have been wandering its streets for 50 years or are discovering it for the first time, there will be plenty happening to make a visit worthwhile.
