Adelaide Central Market Set To Make History This Christmas

Boom! The Adelaide Central Market will be going off this Christmas season…

We Adelaideans love our Central Market. From its amazing array of fresh produce (oh the glorious cheese), its speciality stores and yummy eateries, it really must be one of the best places in the world to shop. And this holiday season the Adelaide Central Market is gearing up for what is hoped to be one of the best Christmas trading periods in its 146-year history.

It is expected that almost one million people will visit the Market in December, with more than 400,000 shoppers anticipated to walk through the Market’s doors in the last two weeks of Christmas trade.

Adelaide Central Market Authority General Manager Aaron Brumby said there was always a real buzz around the Market at Christmas time and projections for 2015 festive trade were hugely positive.

“We are expecting our 250 local suppliers will deliver one million kilograms of fruit and veg and fresh produce to the Market this Christmas period,” Mr Brumby said.

“The Adelaide Central Market is a significant employer over the festive period, our 72 Market traders provide more than 500 local workers with jobs. The whole precinct has an extraordinary atmosphere in December and it is just going to get busier and busier as Christmas nears.”

With the recent announcement of well-known foodie Poh Ling Yeow setting up her new venture Jamface Central by Poh and the Asian Grocer taking a long term lease on Stall 41, the Market is boasting 100 per cent occupancy in a sign of stability and success over the past year.

“Since the Authority’s new Board has been in place we have been working extraordinarily hard towards achieving our vision of making the Adelaide Central Market one of world’s best food and produce markets,” Mr Brumby said.

The Adelaide Central Market’s huge range of festive fare is back this year, including Lucia’s homemade Christmas puddings, house smoked ham from O’Connell Meats, porchetta from Marino Meat Store, South Australian prawns from Samtass Seafood and traditional fruit mince pies from Atlas Continental.

Market shoppers will be able to enjoy Christmas carolling, visit Adelaide’s giant Father Christmas on the Market Tower and watch local foodies in the Community Kitchen showcase Market produce and festive recipe ideas to create at home.

From Monday 21 December to Wednesday 23 December, the Market will be open extended trading hours from 7am until 7pm and from 6am on Christmas Eve Thursday 24 December 2015.
