YUMMY returns to Adelaide for the Fringe Festival with the world premiere of their newest production Iconic.
YUMMY: Iconic is a high camp variety show, highlighting a range of talents with a backing emphasis of drag. The show features a talented troupe of performers including Adelaide’s own Jarred Dewey.
The host of the show is drag performer Valerie Hex whose emcee work seemed more on the snappy, quick humoured signposting style to keep the show a loaded production bursting with acts including her own. There is a lot of predominantly upbeat content squeezed into the sixty minute show but there are a couple darker moments layered among the acts.
The individual acts vary, highlighting the unique skills of each performer. They cover a wide range of performance styles from live vocals, physical theatre and circus, humorous and artful drag and burlesque.
Dewey bookended Iconic with acts of choreographed aerial and flexibility, which are a stand out with the twists on twists that took the acts outside the more standard for such style of performance. The personalised touches feature heavily with each performer and create nice deviations and innovation for each talent.
The costuming is expressive and detailed without losing the camp edges. There’s even a surprise incorporation of Care Bear costumes but the show did keep within its adult content rating.
It is one of the tightest shows of its style I have experienced at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. It is a blast to watch with unique takes on their chosen talents for a variety show.
YUMMY: Iconic runs until the end of the first weekend of Adelaide Fringe 2022 at Gluttony.
