For many of us, building sandcastles is a childhood pastime leaving us with fond memories of filling buckets with sand and carefully arranging them in a way that somewhat revealed a building before it wither crumbled down around us or was washed away by the incoming tide.
For local Adelaide man, Dasun Aitchison, that pastime has followed him into adulthood and he has fine-tuned his skills and turned sandcastle making into an art form.
You may have seen some of his handiwork along our local beaches, he usually sets up near Joe’s Café in Henley Beach, and they understandably get quite a lot of attention with crowds often gathering to admire his handiwork.
And rightfully so! The talented father creates sand masterpieces that look as though they were taken straight from a Disney movie complete with towers, winding staircases, windows and bridges. They are intricate, detailed works of art and it’s almost sad to think that they have a limited lifespan.
A chef by trade, Dusan’s sand crafting talent is completely self-taught, developing from his love of going to the beach with his kids and I’m sure we can all appreciate just how talented this local father is!
The creations can sometimes take hours to construct and often need to be timed perfectly with the tide to ensure that they aren’t destroyed by the incoming ocean. They serve almost like a subtle reminder that nothing is permanent and to always stop and smell the roses (or in this case, admire the sandcastles)
Dasun’s schedule isn’t set in stone (pardon the pun) with the where and when of his creations simply flowing around his work and parenting commitments, however he does share a lot of his work via Instagram so if you miss it in person can always admire it through your screen!
