Adelaide is heading into a wet and windy stretch, with rain building over the weekend and more showers set to linger well into next week. While today stays relatively mild and mostly dry in the city, conditions are expected to turn notably gloomier from Saturday, with a run of cloudy days and repeated bursts of rain likely through to Thursday.
For Friday, Adelaide can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 24 degrees, making it the warmest day of the seven-day outlook. There’s only a slight chance of a late shower tonight, but the bigger story is the strengthening wind, with northeasterlies turning northerly through the morning and becoming quite brisk at times. It’s the kind of day that may feel pleasant enough inland, but noticeably blustery around the coast.
Saturday brings the main change, with a very high chance of rain across Adelaide and a much cooler maximum of 19 degrees. Rain is most likely through the morning and afternoon, with falls between 4 and 15 millimetres possible. Northerly winds will stay fresh before easing later in the day, and it’s shaping up as the sort of day to keep umbrellas and wet-weather plans close by.
By Sunday, things improve briefly. After Saturday’s rain, Adelaide is expected to return to mostly sunny conditions, with a crisp morning low of 9 degrees and a top of 17. Light winds will become easterly during the morning, making for a calmer and more settled day overall. It looks like the best window of the week for getting outdoors.
That break won’t last long. Cloud returns on Monday, along with a very high chance of showers and another 5 to 15 millimetres possible. Temperatures will lift slightly to 19 degrees, but with north to northeasterly winds picking up again, it will feel like the next wet change is settling in. Tuesday follows a very similar pattern, with cloudy skies, showers likely, and rainfall totals possibly reaching 20 millimetres. Overnight temperatures also rise, with a minimum of 14 degrees, making the start to the day less icy but decidedly damp.
Wednesday remains unsettled, with more showers on the cards and a top of 18 degrees. By Thursday, Adelaide’s forecast continues the same trend, although daytime temperatures dip again to 16 degrees. Showers remain very likely, and the city can expect another breezy day as north to northwesterly winds shift west to northwesterly later on. In short, Adelaide is in for one decent break on Sunday before a fairly persistent run of cloudy, rainy winter weather takes hold again.
Across South Australia, the broader outlook is active, especially through western and southern districts. Rain will increase in the far west today before spreading across western coasts and Kangaroo Island tonight, then moving over the agricultural area on Saturday. The West Coast and Kangaroo Island are expected to be among the wetter parts of the state, with isolated falls of 20 to 40 millimetres possible by the end of Monday. Much of the agricultural area is likely to see 10 to 20 millimetres, while the far north and northeast are expected to stay mostly dry.
Regional communities can also expect a noticeable temperature shift. Today will be warmer than average in many parts, but cooler air will push into the far west behind the front. Sunday brings patchy fog on and east of the ranges, while showers become more frequent in the North West Pastoral district later in the day. There is also the possibility of thunderstorms in the far west on Sunday and again about the west on Monday. Inland river flooding remains an ongoing concern too, particularly around Innamincka and the Warburton River, where elevated river levels are expected to continue for several weeks and road access may remain affected.
Happy Friday!
